Tuscany Wedding Guide

Hello! We are Vladimir and Paulina. As Destination Wedding Photographers, we love to travel, but our favorite place is Tuscany, Italy. We are here 4-6 times per year, photographing different couples from around the world. If you are reading this you must be planning or dreaming about the Tuscanian wedding. Tuscany is one of the best places in the world to say your "I DO's". The atmosphere, food is incredible and sunsets... SUNSETS! Are just epic. You won't find anything like this. You will fall in love with Tuscan hills and panoramas.

Why Tuscany Is The Best Wedding Destination?

Why Tuscany?

You may be wondering why we think Tuscany rivals the top destinations in Italy. To put it simply; Tuscany has it all! Whether you are looking to say your vows in front of breath-taking mountains, or whether you would rather watch the sunset on a beautiful sandy beach, Tuscany’s diverse landscape means that you can truly have the wedding of your dreams whatever that might look like.

Located in Central Italy, Tuscany is made up of ten provinces, which means if you are looking to plan your wedding here, you are spoilt for choice! Tuscan scenery provides the perfect backdrop for any wedding that will leave your photo album being swooned over for generations to come. Here are some of our favourite parts of Tuscany that would be the perfect destination for an Italian wedding.

The capital of the Tuscany region, Florence is full of history, art and culture. People from all over the world come here to see the incredible architecture, such as the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral which has an impressive dome dominating the beautiful skyline over Florence. If panoramic views are a must for your wedding photos, consider the Oltrarno district, where you can see the whole of Florence from above while standing at the Piazzale Michelangelo.  If you were to choose to get married near Florence, the photo opportunities would be endless, with culture at every twist and turn and down every cobbled street. It would be a wedding photographer’s dream!

Perhaps a city oozing with culture like Florence isn’t quite for you. Something a little different like Lunigiana might just be exactly what you are looking for! Situated in the far northern tip of Tuscany and known as ‘The Land of a Hundred Castles’, Lunigiana is made up of little towns nestled in valleys surrounded by forests. Do you envision yourself getting married in the mountains? Lunigiana has plenty of choice when considering the back-drop for those all-important wedding photos, whether it be the views over Tuscany from the top of a mountain or the rustic charm of medieval castle ruins. Italian weddings often take place in the warmer months of the summer but autumn is a great time to have a wedding in Lunigiana as this is the start of the chestnut and porcini mushroom season. Imagine the divine menu options for your Wedding Breakfast!

This tiny ancient Italian village in the province of Livorno combines the best of both worlds; coastal views and wine. Well-known for its vineyards and wineries, what better way to impress your guests than with the Bolgheri finest wine created locally? An outdoor ceremony at a vineyard could be just what you are looking for if you are seeking something a little unique and special. A candle-lit dinner, paired with the finest wine overlooking a picturesque vineyard sounds like the perfect Italian wedding to us!

A great excuse for a holiday!

Even with the help of a Wedding Planner, you will most likely need to visit Tuscany at least once before the big day to sort out the legal side of the marriage and even if you find you don’t need to (maybe you are legally marrying here in the UK and having a symbolic ceremony abroad), you will most likely want to visit beforehand! One of the many advantages of marrying in Europe is that flights from the UK are usually fairly cheap and won’t break that all-important wedding budget. After checking out different areas and venues, meeting with many suppliers and cake tasting (the best bit!), you will surely be in desperate need of some relaxation after all the excitement. Why not combine your wedding planning trip to Tuscany with a well-deserved holiday afterwards? It would be rude not to, right?!

Switch off from wedding planning and enjoy what will probably be your last holiday before saying your vows. Paddle your feet at the beach on the beautiful Tuscan island of Elba or soak up the culture at one of the many art galleries in Florence. Let’s not forget having a classic photo ‘holding up’ the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

Slowing down and enjoying what Tuscany has to offer will also allow you to truly appreciate its magic; something you could risk missing if you are sticking to a strict itinerary to tick off your wedding planning to-do list! And if a holiday before the wedding just isn’t possible for whatever reason, there is always a solution; the honeymoon! After all, Italy is considered one of the most romantic destinations in the world and with Tuscany being centrally located, you could travel outwards to any part of Italy!

Tuscany has all the ingredients to make the most spectacular wedding; the beautiful beaches, the jaw-dropping scenery in the mountains, the impressive renaissance architecture in the cities and the unrivalled taste of Italian wine straight from the winery. If you have thought about having an Italian wedding, we hope this blog has helped you to see how Tuscany can make all of your wedding dreams come true. It is easy to see why more and more couples are choosing to marry in Tuscany and you could be next! Why not have a look at some of the gorgeous venues that Tuscany has to offer? We promise you won’t be left disappointed.

How to plan your wedding in Tuscany

Destination weddings are becoming more and more popular, with Italy remaining a firm favourite among couples. Armed with delicious food and wine, stunning scenery and that unforgettable Italian charm, it is easy to see why Italy is often at the top of the list for couples choosing to say ‘I do’ abroad. With many couples choosing the more obvious parts of Italy, such as the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento, we are going to show you exactly why you should have the equally beautiful Tuscany at the very top of your list.

1. Choose your wedding date.

If your dream wedding involves warm weather and long, sunny days, the best time of year to get married in Tuscany would be between May and September. It's also a wedding season in Tuscany.

2. Rent a Wedding Villa.

Most of our couples rent villas on Airbnb. With the help of their family and friends, they can plan a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception. You can use your villa for a few days and end us with a great pool party.

3. Formalities.

Having a legally binding ceremony in Italy requires more preparation and paperwork.

At a minimum, you will need a “Nulla Osta” document.

For UK Nationals, the government website has a useful tool to help determine which documents you might need: What will I need to get married in Italy. You can also download the necessary documents, including any needed for same-sex civil ceremonies: Download Nulla Osta Documents

If you are US nationality, the US embassy has a good sheet of guidance here: Getting married in Italy?

If you live in Australia, the Australian embassy in Rome has put together a very useful guide: Marriage in Italy for Australian Nationals.

4. Visit your Wedding Villa at least once before your wedding day.

It's important to visit the wedding villa at least once. The best time would be six months before your actual wedding date. Make sure you meet your wedding planner, try the wedding menu, and choose other vendors that will make your wedding magical.
